The 2026 NECO June/July Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal — the examination sat by SS3 students in secondary schools across Nigeria — begins in just five days, on Monday, June 15, 2026. If you or your child is sitting NECO this year, this update covers everything you need to know right now, including the timetable, the CBT rollout, registration status, and what to expect after the examination ends.

UPDATE 1: The 2026 NECO SSCE Starts June 15 — Ends July 23

NECO has officially released the timetable for the 2026 June/July SSCE Internal examination. The key dates are as follows:

The 2026 NECO SSCE Internal covers 76 subjects across science, arts, commercial, and vocational/technical disciplines. The examination period includes written papers (essay and objective), practical papers, oral papers, and aural papers depending on the subjects registered. Approximately 1.5 million candidates register for NECO annually across Nigeria, making it one of the largest national examinations in the country.

Candidates are strongly advised to download the official timetable from the NECO website at neco.gov.ng and carefully note the date and time for each paper they are sitting. Missing any paper — even one — directly affects the candidate's final result and cannot be reversed. Physical copies of the timetable are also distributed to schools through state education ministries and carry the same authority as the online version.

Key Subject Dates to Note

While the full timetable covers all 76 subjects, the following core subjects are of particular importance to the majority of candidates:

Candidates should download the PDF timetable, save it on their phone, and print a physical copy for their study area. Do not rely on secondhand information from classmates or social media for paper dates — always verify with the official NECO timetable.

UPDATE 2: Registration Is Closed — Portal Has Shut

Registration for the 2026 NECO SSCE Internal is now officially closed. The normal registration deadline was Monday, May 25, 2026, with a late registration window running from Tuesday, May 26 to Friday, May 29, 2026. The NECO registration portal closed permanently at 11:59 pm on Friday, May 29, 2026.

Candidates who were registered by their schools before the deadline are now confirmed for the examination. If a student's name does not appear on their school's NECO candidate list and the portal has closed, the student cannot sit for the 2026 SSCE Internal. Such candidates will need to consider the NECO GCE (External) later in the year as an alternative.

Schools that registered fewer than 20 candidates and still wished to conduct the examination at their own premises were required to pay an Unviable Centre Fee of ₦70,000. Late registration attracted a penalty of ₦5,000 per candidate. All registration fees are non-refundable once paid.

UPDATE 3: A Major New Development — Every Candidate Now Has a National Learners Identification Number (NLIN)

One of the most significant changes introduced for the 2026 NECO SSCE is the issuance of a National Learners Identification Number (NLIN) to every registered candidate. NECO confirmed that all candidates registered for the 2026 SSCE Internal have been assigned a unique NLIN as part of the examination process.

The NLIN is a new national identification system for Nigerian learners, linked to the National Identification Number (NIN), which NECO has made compulsory for registration. The integration of NIN into NECO registration — similar to what JAMB and WAEC have done — is designed to strengthen candidate identity verification, reduce impersonation, and ensure that each candidate's examination record is tied permanently to their national identity database.

Candidates should confirm their NLIN on their examination documents. This number may be required for future result verification and certificate processing.

UPDATE 4: The CBT Rollout — 2026 NECO Is a Hybrid Examination

The 2026 NECO SSCE Internal is officially a hybrid examination — combining Computer-Based Examination (CBE) and Pen and Paper Examination (PPE) depending on the school. This means that some schools will write NECO in the traditional paper-and-pencil format, while others have been designated to write in CBT mode.

NECO has confirmed that schools assigned to write in CBE mode have been notified directly before the examination. If your school has not received a notification about CBE, you are likely writing in the traditional PPE format. Candidates should confirm with their school's examination officer which mode applies to their centre.

The Federal Government's announcement that NECO will commence CBT this year was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, at NECO's 25th anniversary celebration in Abuja. The move is part of a broader government strategy to modernise Nigeria's national examination system and reduce examination malpractice. The CBT system allows NECO to monitor candidates in real time, detect malpractice faster, limit question paper leakages, and bring national examinations closer to global assessment standards.

The government has set an ambitious target: achieving zero examination malpractice by 2027 through the full rollout of Computer-Based Examinations across NECO. The 2026 hybrid model is therefore a transitional step — not yet full CBT, but a major move in that direction.

UPDATE 5: The Junior WAEC (BECE) 2026 Is Also Ongoing

Alongside the SSCE Internal, NECO also conducts the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) — popularly known as Junior WAEC — for JSS3 students. The 2026 BECE timetable has been released and the examination is also running within the same general period. JSS3 students should confirm their own timetable and examination centre details with their schools separately from the SSCE Internal.

The BECE covers core junior secondary school subjects and is an important milestone for students transitioning from junior to senior secondary school. While it does not directly affect university admission, it is a required qualification for progression to SS1 in most Nigerian secondary schools.

UPDATE 6: When Will 2026 NECO Results Be Released?

The 2026 NECO SSCE Internal ends on July 23, 2026. Based on NECO's historical pattern of releasing results between four and six weeks after the final paper, candidates can expect results sometime between late August and early September 2026.

This timeline is significant for candidates planning to use their NECO results for the 2026/2027 university admission cycle. If results come out by late August or early September, candidates will have a narrow but workable window to upload their NECO results on JAMB CAPS before the public university admission deadline of October 31, 2026. Candidates should be ready to act immediately once results are released — any delay in uploading results on JAMB CAPS after they are out could cost them their admission for the year.

When results are released, candidates can check them at result.neco.gov.ng by entering their registration number and paying for a result token pin of ₦1,000. Digital certificates are expected to be available online shortly after results are released, in line with NECO's move toward digital credential delivery.

UPDATE 7: The NECO GCE (External) — The Alternative for Private Candidates

For candidates who are not currently in secondary school — including those who did not register for the 2026 SSCE Internal, those who need to improve their existing O'Level grades, or those who missed the WAEC registration — the NECO GCE (SSCE External) is the main alternative.
